If you are a regular user of Mac system you might save your valuable data on the Mac hard drive. Here I strongly suggest you to create an image of the hard drive for the regular backup purposes. It prevents from data loss situations.
Disk image is nothing but a file which contains files, directories, and even structure of the hard drive. In this file the entire copy of your files are saved sector by sector. So it is the easiest way to create backup of your critical data which are stored on the Mac hard drive.
If you face any data loss situation like accidental deletion or any other else, the disk image will help you to fix the hard drive related errors and get the data back. It works even in the case of damaged MacBook hard drive and helps you to repair Mac OS X.
But sometimes disk image cannot detect and prompts and error messages:-
"Disk Utility stopped repairing permissions on '(volume name)' because the following error was encountered: No valid packages"
OR
"Verify volume failed with error could not unmount disk"
In this condition the disk image not able to repair the hard disk and you are not allowed to access data stored on that. In such a case you should use a Mac Data Recovery tool.
